History
1964
W.M. Kelley begins operations in New Albany, Indiana as a supplier of used woodworking equipment. In the early years, the founder, William Kelley, quickly realized he could supplement his machine sales business by doing some light metal fabrication.
1970
During those early days, the company moved from New Albany, Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky, and finally to its current location (620 Durgee Road, New Albany, Indiana).
1976
William Kelley passed away. At this time, two of William’s sons, Frederick and Michael, took over running the day-to-day operations of the company.
1985
Fred and Mike began the process of purchasing the company from their mother, Ruth Kelley, and W.M. Kelley became incorporated and began operating as W.M. Kelley Company, Inc.
2017
The decision was made by Fred and Mike to sell the business to the employees who helped them build the company. On October 1, 2017, the ownership of W.M. Kelley Company was transferred to become a 100% Employee Owned Company. Fred retired from active duty at W.M. Kelley in late 2018 and passed away in March of 2021. Mike, along with his Board of Directors, remains involved in the day-to-day operations as the President of the corporation.
2021
Acquired Lauyans & Company Inc. on January 1, 2021. Lauyans & Company Inc. originally began operation in 1986, focusing on providing the industry with Custom Material Handling Solutions.
As W.M. Kelley Company continues to operate with the same founding principles as a small family-owned business, we also continue to move ahead in capacity and technology with the same goal we strove to achieve in the early years – to take care of the customer.
Employee Ownership
W.M. Kelley is 100% employee owned. What does that mean to you as a customer? Simply this: as an owner, every team member, regardless of his or her role and responsibilities, is focused on the company’s success. So, each and every person understands that success means providing each and every customer with the highest quality and reliability, each and every day. Because of this, our customers benefit from a team that is relentlessly focused on getting the details right, and getting it done on time. That focus — the kind of commitment that comes from being 100% employee owned — is one of the many qualities that sets W.M. Kelley apart.
